Making of Eco-friendly Cloth Bags

“In 1950, the world’s population of 2.5 billion produced 1.5 million tons of plastic; in 2016, a global population of more than 7 billion people produced over 320 million tons of plastic. This is set to double by 2034.”

Many studies have shown that Plastic is one of the most harmful things for our environment. It has numerous deadly effects on civilization. Governments of so many nations have banned the use of plastic bags. Lots of NGOs are also working to curb the excessive use of plastic. In our daily life, we use plastic in the form of plastic bags or polythene. Indian Government itself has banned the use of these plastic bags so many times but still, there has never been a drastic change in the statistics in the usage of these plastic bags. I believe it is the responsibility of each and every citizen of the nation to reduce the use of plastic in their daily lives. SEVA has this mission to serve the mother Earth and in this mission, SEVA urges you to ditch the plastic and start using Eco-friendly products. Believe me, it is not at all expensive. SEVA believes in making affordable eco-friendly products so that everyone can afford them and if you can’t or don’t want to buy these products. Don’t worry, today we are going to teach you how you can make these eco-friendly products at your home. Through this blog post, we are going to share the process of making Cloth Bags. Believe me, if everyone starts using Cloth Bags in their everyday lives, then only the change will come. So, let’s get started.

1) Selecting Fabric

First step is to select the fabric. You can choose any fabric cotton, jute, or any synthetic fabric like nylon. And it is not necessary for you to buy new fabric you can even use any old piece of cloth-like your old dupatta, or any old T-shirt or the fabric of your old jeans. You can easily recycle your old clothes and made beautiful handmade grocery bags or shopping bags. You can even take two different fabrics one for the inner part and one for the outer part. Make sure to wash and iron the fabric before start stitching.

Deciding Shape and Size

Then you have to decide the shape and size of your bag. As it is a shopping bag it should be big. You can measure 21 inches wide and 20 inches long (according to your convenience). After measuring the size, you can cut the fabric into two pieces.

3) Start Stitching

Once you have all the fabric pieces now you have to stitch all the cloth pieces together. You can even add a piece of Buckram sheet on the base of the bag. It will give the bag a particular shape. Stich all the pieces together in the shape of a shopping bag.

4) Attach Handles

You can cut the long stripes of the same cloth, fold the cloth to make it stronger and stitch the two strips on each side.

5) Finishing

After the bag is ready you can paint or make an embroidery pattern.

Now you have your own handmade shopping bag. These bags are stronger, cheaper, and customizable. So, what are you waiting for go and make your own grocery and shopping bags? And if you do not have the time to make this you can simply buy such type of eco-friendly bags from SEVA itself. SEVA teaches different vocational skills to the tribal women of the SGNP to make them self-empowered and self-reliant.
